Buckingham Palace has been warned to “watch their back” after Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were reunited with King Charles. The monarch saw his grandchildren, Prince Archie, seven, and Princess Lilibet, five, when the Duke and Duchess of Sussex visited Highgrove earlier this month. It was the first time Archie and Lilibet had seen Charles since the late Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations in 2022.

The meeting has been interpreted as a sign of the thawing of the relationship between the King and his estranged son, Harry. It has also led to speculation that the Sussexes may want to pursue a royal role after they stepped back as working royals in 2020.

Daily Mail Royal Editor, Rebecca English, told the latest episode of the publication’s Palace Confidential podcast that there was a need to be on guard. She said: “I think the Palace do need to be alive to the fact there is a lot of concern that meeting will be used as a way to inveigle themselves back in to this half in and half out role – not maybe in the short term, but in the long term – and I think that is something people in the UK and around the world are deeply concerned about.”

The royal expert said the Palace went into the reunion with the “best of intentions”, but she did not know about the Sussex side, adding: “That’s where they need to watch their back a bit.”
