In his new book The Four Wives of Windsor, royal commentator Simon Vigar argues that the Duchess of Sussex possessed “huge Princess Diana potential” and had all the qualities needed to become a transformative royal figure.

Far from criticizing Meghan’s abilities, Vigar praises her as “obviously a massive asset” to the monarchy, highlighting her confidence with the public and her natural ability to connect with people during engagements.

“She was brilliant with the crowd,” he writes, adding that she “would have been a major player” had events unfolded differently.

One of the strongest examples he points to is Meghan’s Together cookbook, created in support of the women affected by the Grenfell Tower tragedy. Vigar describes it as evidence that Meghan was “a doer”—someone who wanted to make a genuine difference rather than simply fulfill ceremonial duties.

“It is such a shame that it’s gone to waste,” he laments.

But according to Vigar, the difficulties began because Meghan entered royal life under very different circumstances from Princess Diana.

While Diana married into the Royal Family at just 20 years old, Meghan was 36, with an established career, public profile, and her own expectations about managing her image.

Vigar argues that Meghan expected a level of control over public relations that simply wasn’t possible within the traditions and structure of the British monarchy.
