Prince Mirko Of Bulgaria Announces His Engagement To Fellow Doctor Marta Embid As Europe’s Royal Circles Prepare For Another Fairytale Wedding

Another royal wedding is coming soon: Prince Mirko of Bulgaria is engaged!

The 31-year-old grandson of King Simeon — Bulgaria’s last Tsar and former prime minister — has announced his engagement to his longtime partner, Dr. Marta Embid, according to HELLO! magazine.

The couple met while studying medicine in Madrid in 2023. He currently works as a digestive surgeon at the Vithas Arturo Soria Hospital, while she specializes in anesthesiology and resuscitation.

Medicine runs in the family for Mirko, who is the eldest son of Prince Kubrat, the third son of King Simeon and his wife, Margarita Gómez-Acebo y Cejuela. Prince Kubrat was also a surgeon, specializing in colorectal surgeries, and also worked in Madrid.

Many of the Bulgarian royals have close ties to Spain; each of King Simeon’s five children followed his lead in marrying a Spaniard.

King Simeon reigned as the last Tsar of Bulgaria from 1943 to 1946, when the monarchy was abolished by a referendum. He was forced into exile for 50 years, until the fall of Communism in the country in 1996.

He then returned home and founded his own political party, the National Movement for Stability and Progress party, also known as the National Movement Simeon II party. He won the election in 2001 and served as the country’s prime minister until 2005.

With the Bulgarian monarchy defunct, each of Simeon’s children got advanced degrees and success in their respective fields. Prince Kardam earned a master’s degree in Agricultural Economics from Penn State University before he died in 2015; Princes Kyril and Konstantin-Assen graduated from Princeton and Columbia, respectively, before going to work in finance; and Princess Kalina went to school in France, later becoming an artist and activist.

Though they are not technically royals, King Simeon’s descendants maintain close ties in European royal circles, particularly in Spain.

In addition to their commitment to medicine, Mirko and his bride-to-be also enjoy traveling, as evidenced by his enviable Instagram page, which includes photos from Panama, the Canary Islands, Andorra and more.

The couple plan to marry next summer in Madrid, which will be a bit of a full-circle moment for their relationship.

One of their first high-profile appearances as a couple came when they joined Mirko’s parents as guests at the April 2024 wedding of Madrid Mayor José Luis Martínez-Almeida to Teresa Urquijo.
