The heavy door to the trauma room didn’t just open; it was thrust aside.
Captain Miller of the San Diego Police Department stepped in, his hand resting casually on his duty belt. Flanking him were two Military Police Investigators in crisp uniforms, and Dr. Aris, the chief trauma surgeon.
Eleanor Sterling’s arrogant smile faltered, but she quickly recovered, smoothing her designer skirt. “Captain Miller, thank goodness. This woman is trespassing and aggravating my daughter-in-law’s psychiatric episode. Have her removed.”
Captain Miller didn’t look at Eleanor. He looked at me. “Colonel Hayes. Is the area secure?”
“It is now, Captain,” I replied, my voice echoing off the sterile tiles. I reached into my pocket, tapped the screen of my phone, and played the audio file.
The room filled with Eleanor’s crisp, recorded voice: “Let’s not make this unpleasant. Our family plays golf with federal judges… Your little military titles don’t intimidate us.” Followed by Preston’s distinct smirk: “Pack up your daughter and be thankful we aren’t pressing charges…”
Julian’s face drained of color. He took a frantic step back, bumping into the heart monitor.
“That is an illegal recording!” Preston shouted, his polished demeanor cracking. “You can’t use that!”
“California is a two-party consent state, Preston,” Captain Miller said coldly. “However, a hospital emergency room with an open door carries no legal expectation of privacy. Furthermore, Dr. Aris here has already documented defensive wounds, severe contusions, and signs of unlawful restraint on Mrs. Sterling.”
Julian raised his hands, panicking. “She fell! I swear, she tripped by the pool—”
“Save it for the booking sergeant,” Miller snapped. He gestured to his officers. “Julian Sterling, you are under arrest for felony domestic battery and unlawful imprisonment. Preston and Eleanor Sterling, you are being detained for questioning regarding accessory and witness intimidation.”
Eleanor shrieked as the handcuffs clicked around her golden boy’s wrists. “Do you know who we are?! I will have your badge, Miller! I will have your pension!”
