But after such a major setback, the big question remains: when will Rod Stewart be ready to perform again?

Penny Lancaster Shares Reassuring Update on Rod Stewart After Heart Surgery

Rod Stewart may have had to step away from the stage, but according to his wife Penny Lancaster, the 81-year-old rock legend is already getting back into his usual routine—and looking ahead to his return.

Lancaster, 55, said Stewart “will come back stronger than ever” after undergoing a heart operation that forced him to cancel the remainder of his 2026 US and Mexico tour.

Speaking to the Press Association, she said Stewart is now back to his normal day-to-day activities and is eager to see his fans again after receiving an outpouring of support and well wishes.

“He’s back at full speed in his day-to-day activities,” Lancaster said, although doctors advised him to postpone or cancel the tour because of the risks involved.

Why Rod Stewart Had to Stop Touring

Stewart’s remaining 2026 dates were called off after he underwent a routine coronary stent procedure.

The decision came after a series of health-related disruptions earlier in the year. His tour had already included postponed and cancelled performances, before the heart procedure ultimately brought the rest of his US and Mexico dates to an end.

Although the cancellation was difficult for Stewart, Lancaster explained that performing is far more physically demanding for him than simply standing onstage.

She told the Press Association that Stewart does not spend his shows sitting on a stool or behind a piano. Instead, he spends nearly two hours running around the stage, changing costumes four times and working up a sweat throughout the performance.

Lancaster compared the way he launches into a concert to “a boxer coming out of his dressing room on the way to the ring” or “a horse coming out the blocks.”

“He runs on and he’s like, you know, straight into it, 100 miles an hour and doesn’t stop,” she said, describing the physical intensity of his performances.

For that reason, she said, doctors felt cancelling the tour was the safest option. Stewart was reportedly devastated by the decision.

Lancaster Says Stewart Is Building Himself Back Up

While Stewart has returned to his everyday activities, Lancaster said his physical recovery is being handled carefully.

The singer has continued working out at the gym, but under strict instructions about how much exercise he should do. Rather than immediately returning to his previous level of activity, he has been gradually building his strength back up.

Lancaster admitted that slowing her husband down has never been easy.

“He’s going to come back stronger than ever,” she said, adding that Stewart now feels as though he has “a new lease of life.”

The update offers an encouraging picture of his recovery, although his return to the stage remains dependent on medical advice.

When Will Rod Stewart Return to the Stage?

Stewart’s 2026 tour was originally scheduled to continue into September, but the remaining US and Mexico performances were cancelled following his procedure.

He is now expected to return for US dates next year.

Before the cancellations, Stewart had been performing as part of his “One Last Time” farewell tour, including planned appearances across the US and Mexico and a six-night residency at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas.

In a statement shared after his procedure, Stewart said he was already feeling better and was “very much on the mend.” His representatives also said doctors were pleased with his recovery and that he had returned to his normal daily activities.

For now, Lancaster’s message is clear: the priority is giving Stewart enough time to recover fully before he gets back in front of an audience.

And judging by her description of his energy, his biggest challenge may simply be convincing him to slow down long enough to heal.

Penny Lancaster’s Other Cause

Lancaster made the comments while supporting Street Child’s Back To School campaign.

The charity is asking the public to pledge £4 per month to help support a child’s education for an entire year. According to Street Child, 79 million children around the world currently do not have access to education.

Lancaster said she first became aware of Street Child after seeing its work in Sierra Leone. Since then, she has periodically supported the charity’s campaigns and helped raise awareness of its work.

As a mother, she said she feels fortunate that providing school equipment and access to education is something her family does not have to worry about.

She also pointed out how easily children in countries with greater access to education can take school for granted, while millions of others simply wish they had the opportunity to attend.

The campaign aims to help more children return to school this term, with donations made before September directly supporting Street Child’s efforts.
