Squeeze canceled its scheduled concert at Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts in Vienna, Virginia, on Thursday, September 3, after a worker was killed in a tragic accident at the venue earlier that day.

The worker was underneath a tour bus in the venue’s parking lot when a supporting apparatus failed, causing the vehicle to collapse on top of him, according to U.S. Park Police and local reports. The man was pronounced dead at the scene, and authorities have not publicly identified him.

The accident happened around 5 p.m., only a few hours before Squeeze was scheduled to perform at 7:30 p.m.

Squeeze cancels show following the tragedy

After speaking with Wolf Trap and the relevant authorities, Squeeze decided to call off Thursday night’s performance.

In a statement, the British band said it was “deeply saddened and shocked” by the incident and the loss of life. The group added that it would work with the venue and promoter to determine whether the concert could be rescheduled and promised to provide ticket holders with further information when it becomes available.

“Our thoughts remain with everyone affected by this tragic event,” the band said.

Wolf Trap also addressed the incident, confirming that an accident involving a member of the community had resulted in a death at the national park.

“Out of respect, tonight’s show has been canceled,” the venue said in a social media statement.

The cancellation came just hours before fans were expected to gather for the concert, making for a somber evening at the Virginia venue.

What happened in the parking lot

According to police, the worker was carrying out work underneath the tour bus when the apparatus supporting the vehicle failed. The bus then collapsed onto him.

Reports have described the incident as involving a tour bus associated with the event, while other coverage has cautioned that it has not been established whether the vehicle was specifically being used by Squeeze.

The fatal accident occurred on the property of Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts, a major performing arts venue just outside Washington, D.C.

Squeeze remains on its U.S. tour

Squeeze is currently touring the United States. The group was scheduled to continue its run with a performance at the Rose Music Center in Huber Heights, Ohio, on September 4, followed by a show in Highland Park, Illinois, on Sunday.

The band is touring in support of its latest album, Trixies, which was released in March.

The Virginia concert was part of the band’s ongoing U.S. run with Adam Ant and Haircut 100.

For now, Squeeze has said it will work with the promoter and Wolf Trap on the possibility of rescheduling the canceled performance. Ticket holders are expected to receive additional information once plans are confirmed.

The tragedy has brought an abrupt pause to what was meant to be an evening of live music, leaving the band, venue and everyone involved with the event mourning a life lost before the concert could begin.
