Airing on TV tonight is a British war film, filled with drama and plenty of “moving” moments that will leave feeling emotional.

Since its release in 2014, the film has garnered a fair amount of fans as they continue to sing its praises online, where it boasts an 84% Rotten Tomatoes review.

Testament of Youth is a touching story set during the First World War and based on the memoir of Vera Brittain, who lived the experiences you see play out on screen.

The story is based on an ambitious and independent young girl named Vera who, in order to escape their traditional family life in Buxton, attends Oxford University. Alongside her is her brother Edward and his two closest friends, Roland and Victor, who have formed a clan of sorts.

Before starting their schooling, Vera and Roland shared a romance; meanwhile, Victor is secretly in love with her. When the war breaks out during their time at university, the three boys are excited to join the army, and Vera, not wanting to be left behind, enrols as a nurse in the war.

Slowly but surely the realities of war seep into their lives, and the men that she loves are all dropping like flies.

The actress playing Vera is Alicia Vikander, and her performance has been praised by both critics and viewers alike. A review reads: “Powerful, emotional and engaging World War 1 movie. I can’t fault it in any of the production values. Exquisitely guided by an irresistible and magnetic performance by Alicia Vikander.”
