Directed by Amma Asante, A United Kingdom is her third feature following A Way of Life and Belle. Like Belle, the film draws attention to a lesser-known chapter in British history, particularly the ways racism, colonial politics and social convention shaped the lives of individuals caught inside them. The film was also selected as the opening-night film of the 2016 London Film Festival.
A Love Story That Becomes an International Crisis
The story begins in London in 1947, where Seretse Khama is studying law. He is also heir to the throne of the Bamangwato people of Bechuanaland, while his uncle Tshekedi Khama acts as regent.
Ruth Williams, meanwhile, is a young London office worker employed at Lloyd’s of London. Their meeting develops into a whirlwind romance, and before long the couple decide to marry.
But their relationship immediately faces opposition. Seretse is Black and Ruth is white, a combination that challenged the racial attitudes of the period. Their families and communities object, while the British government becomes increasingly concerned about the diplomatic consequences of the marriage.
The situation is made even more complicated by Bechuanaland’s proximity to South Africa, where the National Party was establishing apartheid. British authorities feared that Seretse and Ruth’s marriage could further damage relations with South Africa.
What begins as a personal decision therefore becomes a political problem involving Britain, South Africa and the future of Bechuanaland.
David Oyelowo and Rosamund Pike Are the Film’s Greatest Strength
The most compelling element of A United Kingdom is the chemistry between its two leads.
Oyelowo portrays Seretse as intelligent, composed and increasingly determined as the political pressure around him intensifies. Pike’s Ruth is equally important, particularly as she attempts to find her place in a country and community where her arrival is viewed with suspicion.
Their romance is deliberately restrained rather than overtly sensual. Much of its emotional power comes through expressions, glances and small moments between the characters.
That approach allows Oyelowo and Pike to communicate the excitement of two people discovering one another while also showing how quickly that happiness becomes entangled with forces far beyond their control. Critics have particularly praised the believable bond between the pair, even during the long periods when political circumstances force them apart.

A Wider Story About Britain and Its Colonial Past
Beyond the romance, A United Kingdom examines an uncomfortable period in Britain’s relationship with its former and remaining colonial territories.
Seretse’s position makes the situation particularly complicated. He is not simply a young African student who has fallen in love in London. He is the future leader of the Bamangwato, meaning that his personal choices carry political consequences for an entire nation.
At the same time, Ruth must confront the reality that marrying Seretse means entering a society where she is viewed as an outsider.
Director Amma Asante deliberately gives space to this perspective rather than presenting Ruth simply as a passive figure in Seretse’s story. The film also explores her relationship with members of his family and community, including his sister Naledi, whose initial opposition reflects the concerns surrounding a white woman becoming queen.
A Beautifully Mounted Historical Drama
Visually, the film contrasts two very different worlds.
The London sequences carry the restrained atmosphere of postwar Britain, while the Bechuanaland scenes provide a much broader and more colourful setting. Shot in both the UK and Botswana, the production uses its locations and period design to underline the distance between the worlds Seretse and Ruth are trying to bring together.
Sam McCurdy’s cinematography and the production design help give the story a polished period-drama appearance. The result is a film that presents its historical setting with considerable visual care while keeping the central couple at the emotional centre.
The Historical Significance Behind the Romance
The story ultimately extends far beyond Seretse and Ruth’s marriage.
The crisis surrounding their relationship became an important episode in the political history of Bechuanaland. Seretse Khama later became the country’s first president after Bechuanaland gained independence and became Botswana in 1966.
That wider historical significance gives the romance an importance beyond the conventions of a traditional period love story. What begins with two people meeting in postwar London eventually becomes connected to the political future of an entire country.

There is an interesting tension at the centre of A United Kingdom.
The filmmaking follows many familiar traditions of the prestige historical romance: beautiful locations, polished performances and a carefully constructed period setting. Some critics have found the approach conventional, particularly when compared with the extraordinary events being portrayed.
But the material itself remains compelling because the central relationship really did challenge the political and racial assumptions of its time.
Asante’s greatest achievement is arguably the decision to tell this major historical episode through the relationship between two individuals. The political crisis matters because it threatens their marriage, while their personal struggle gives a human dimension to a much larger story about colonialism, race and power.
