A Georgia farm has been left heartbroken after a beloved 1-year-old donkey named Hee-Haw was fatally shot by a police officer during a search for a missing child early Sunday morning.

For the family who raised him from just one hour old, Hee-Haw was never simply a farm animal. He was a bottle-fed baby who grew into a much-loved companion, a familiar presence who followed people around the farm and greeted visitors with his unmistakable bray.

Now, the farm feels painfully different without him.

 

A Farm That Suddenly Feels Too Quiet

At Elsberry Farm, the familiar sounds of cows, pigs and roosters can still be heard.

But one sound is missing.

Hee-Haw’s bray.

Owner Hannah Israel said the donkey would often stand nearby while she talked, seemingly determined to join in the conversation.

“He was my kid,” Israel said, recalling how she bottle-raised him from approximately one hour old.

Her bond with Hee-Haw was unlike the relationship she might have had with an ordinary farm animal. He was part of her daily routine, constantly nearby and deeply woven into the family’s life.

“Just traumatized and shocked. I honestly can’t even believe he’s not here,” Israel said.

She described the loss as something that is difficult to put into words because of how much of their everyday life revolved around him.

“He was such a part of our lives, just daily.”

Police Confirm One Of Their Officers Fired The Shot

Cedartown Police Chief Jamie Newsom confirmed that one of his officers shot and killed Hee-Haw while officers were searching the area for a missing child.

The search eventually led investigators to the location where the shooting occurred.

Newsom described the incident as “very unfortunate and heartbreaking,” while also expressing sympathy for the family who lost their animal.

But the police chief has declined to publicly explain the precise circumstances that immediately preceded the shooting while the investigation remains underway.

One potentially crucial piece of evidence does exist: body-camera footage.

Newsom confirmed that footage was recorded and said he has personally reviewed it. However, he has not disclosed what it shows, saying he does not want to comment on evidence while the investigation continues.

That footage could ultimately become central to answering the questions surrounding Hee-Haw’s final moments.

His Owner Says Hee-Haw Was Friendly, Not Aggressive

Israel’s account of Hee-Haw’s personality adds another emotional layer to the tragedy.

She described him as an unusually friendly animal who loved being around people.

According to Israel, whenever Hee-Haw saw someone, he would often run toward them while braying, seemingly expecting attention and affection.

“He loved people, and he thought he was a person,” she said.

That behaviour is now particularly painful for Israel because she believes it may have been connected to the encounter that ended his life.

Rather than interpreting his approach as threatening, she believes Hee-Haw may simply have been behaving as he always did when he saw people nearby.

Israel said he had been raised around humans from the moment he was born and was so accustomed to the family that he even slept in her bed during his first three months.

For someone who knew him so intimately, the idea that he could have been perceived as a danger remains difficult for her to understand.

“I don’t see any reason that he is not here right now,” she said.

A Missing Child Was Eventually Found Safe

The search that brought officers onto the property was prompted by a missing 12-year-old girl.

The child was eventually found safe at a church near the pasture where Hee-Haw was shot.

The officer involved has since been placed on paid administrative leave while the Georgia Department of Agriculture Law Enforcement Division investigates the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

The investigation is expected to examine what happened during the encounter and whether the officer’s decision to use deadly force against the donkey was justified under the circumstances.

For now, many of the most important details remain unanswered.

The Questions Left Behind

For Israel and her family, the investigation may eventually provide an explanation, but it cannot bring Hee-Haw back.

They are left grieving an animal they raised from infancy — one they considered part of the family rather than livestock.

The contrast between the police account and Israel’s description of Hee-Haw has also made the incident especially painful.

One side points to an encounter during a tense search operation. The other remembers a gentle, people-loving donkey who had spent his entire life trusting the humans around him.

Until investigators release more information, it remains unclear exactly what happened in those final moments.

But at Elsberry Farm, the loss is already painfully real.
