While Call the Midwife has remained a favorite of period-drama audiences since arriving on screens in 2012, another much-loved British series is earning equally passionate praise — with some viewers going as far as declaring it even better.

Channel 5’s All Creatures Great and Small has developed a devoted following thanks to its combination of gentle storytelling, humor, memorable characters and spectacular Yorkshire scenery. And with Seasons 7 and 8 already confirmed, fans have plenty more to look forward to.

A comforting escape to the Yorkshire Dales

The current All Creatures Great and Small premiered in 2020 as a new adaptation of the stories previously brought to television in the BBC’s 1978 series.

Both versions draw from the autobiographical work of British veterinarian James Alfred Wight, who wrote under the pen name James Herriot.

Set in the 1930s, the Channel 5 drama follows newly qualified veterinarian James Herriot as he begins working in the Yorkshire Dales. His new life introduces him to fellow veterinary professionals, local residents and, inevitably, a seemingly endless collection of animals requiring his attention.

The warmth of All Creatures Great and Small has inevitably drawn comparisons with another long-running British favorite, Call the Midwife.

The BBC drama follows nurse-midwives working in London’s East End through the social changes of the 1950s, ’60s and ’70s. Although the settings and professions are very different, both shows have become known for emotional stories, period detail and characters audiences enjoy returning to year after year.

For some viewers, however, All Creatures Great and Small has the edge.
