Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Reportedly Left Emotional by Unexpected Welcome During Nottingham Return
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were reportedly surprised and moved by the crowds that gathered to welcome them during their recent visit to Nottingham, having expected a much quieter reception.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex carried out three public engagements in the city on Thursday, attracting well-wishers and considerable media attention despite no longer serving as working members of the Royal Family.
Speaking on The Royals with Roya and Kate podcast, The Times royal editor Roya Nikkhah said the couple had been warmly received.
“From what I saw, they were very warmly received. Very warmly received,” she explained.
“And I was told they were quite surprised by that. And I was told they were quite emotional about it because they weren’t expecting anyone to turn out.”
Meghan Shares Touching Reunion With 90-Year-Old Well-Wisher
The Nottingham visit carried special significance for Harry and Meghan, who made their first joint public appearance following their engagement in the city in December 2017.
Nearly nine years later, the couple encountered someone who had preserved a memory of that occasion.
Irene Hardman, 90, arrived carrying a framed photograph of Harry and Meghan from their original visit.
Meghan appeared touched by the gesture, embracing Irene and kissing her on the cheek.
“Oh my gosh. How sweet is that? This was our very first walkabout,” the Duchess said.
Irene replied: “I remember you, my darling.”
The exchange became one of the most personal moments of the visit, reconnecting Meghan with an early chapter of her public life alongside Harry.
Sussexes Draw Large Crowds at Community Recording Studio
Among the couple’s engagements was a visit to the Community Recording Studio (CRS) in St Ann’s, Nottingham, a charity supporting young people and the local community through creative opportunities.

Harry and Meghan met schoolchildren, charity representatives and well-wishers, with members of the public offering flowers, photographs and requests for selfies.
Meghan expressed her happiness at returning, telling one supporter: “Oh, it’s great to be back.”
Harry also shared a lighthearted exchange with a woman wearing a bright pink jacket, complimenting her outfit.
Nikkhah revealed that the Sussexes’ representatives had reportedly anticipated relatively low-key appearances. Instead, the first engagement attracted a substantial gathering of journalists and photographers.
“The very fact that a load of press did turn up, you know, an absolutely huge bank of photographers at that first engagement at the community recording studio, just goes to show that wherever Harry and Meghan go, you know, it’s going to get a lot of coverage,” she said.
Meghan Makes Rare Public Return to Britain

The visit marked Meghan’s first public engagements in Britain since the period surrounding Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral in September 2022.
Harry and Meghan stepped back from senior royal duties in 2020 and subsequently relocated to California with their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.
Although their Nottingham appearances resembled traditional royal walkabouts, they were not official engagements on behalf of the monarchy.
Correspondence to government stakeholders authorized by King Charles last month reportedly reaffirmed that the Sussexes remain private citizens.
Nevertheless, the enthusiastic reception highlighted the continuing attention surrounding the couple’s appearances in Britain.
Nottingham Visit Brings Back Memories of 2017

For Harry and Meghan, returning to Nottingham meant revisiting the city where their public journey as an engaged couple began.
Their 2017 appearance introduced Meghan to many members of the British public as Prince Harry’s future wife. This latest visit took place after six years of living outside the working monarchy.
The reunion with Irene Hardman, the conversations with well-wishers and the unexpectedly large crowds gave the occasion a personal dimension.
According to Nikkhah, the welcome was something the couple had neither anticipated nor taken for granted.
While their official royal roles have changed, the Nottingham visit showed that Harry and Meghan can still attract considerable public attention during their appearances in Britain.
