Meghan Markle Breaks Eight-Year Silence on Why Her Father Has Never Met Archie and Lilibet as Disturbing Allegations Emerge
Meghan Markle has revealed that her decision to keep Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet away from her estranged father was connected to serious concerns she first learned about eight years ago.
The Duchess of Sussex, 45, issued a statement on October 23 after reports emerged that authorities were examining allegations involving her father, Thomas Markle Sr., 82.
In a significant development in the family’s long-running estrangement, Meghan said she had been aware of troubling claims since 2018, the year she married Prince Harry.
She explained that protecting her children had been the central reason for preventing contact with their grandfather.
Thomas Sr. has strongly denied the allegations, which remain unproven.

Meghan Markle Reveals the Reason Behind Her Children’s Estrangement
For years, Meghan’s fractured relationship with her father has attracted considerable public attention.
However, her latest statement provides a previously undisclosed explanation for why Thomas Sr. has never met her children.
Speaking through a statement shared with PEOPLE, Meghan said that despite what she considers years of misleading media coverage, her decision to maintain the separation had always been motivated by the need to protect Archie and Lilibet.
The children, aged seven and five, have never had a relationship with their maternal grandfather.
Meghan’s remarks mark one of her most direct public explanations of the boundaries she has maintained around her family.
A Letter Sent in 2018 Raises New Questions

According to Meghan, her concerns began shortly after her wedding to Prince Harry in May 2018.
She said she became aware of a letter containing serious allegations about her father that had been sent to the Metropolitan Police and its Royalty and Specialist Protection Command.
The Duchess claimed the correspondence was subsequently shared with her and that she received assurances the information was being examined.
A source familiar with the situation told PEOPLE that the allegations had not been substantiated at that stage.
The source added that Meghan had been advised against discussing them publicly because doing so could potentially affect an investigation.
She was also reportedly concerned about the legal implications of repeating accusations that had not been proven.
The existence and handling of the reported letter have now become part of the questions being examined by authorities.
New Allegations Against Thomas Markle Sr. Prompt Official Responses

The latest controversy began after The Sun reported allegations made by Meghan’s half-brother, Thomas Markle Jr.
Thomas Jr., 60, claimed to have discovered suspected child sexual abuse material among belongings associated with their father at a former residence in Cebu, Philippines.
He alleged that the material was found among computer equipment and other items stored in several boxes.
According to the report, Thomas Jr. contacted authorities in the Philippines and the United States, including the FBI.
The allegations have not been established as fact, and the reported discovery does not itself demonstrate that Thomas Sr. committed an offense.
Philippine Justice Undersecretary Nicholas Ty confirmed, according to Reuters, that a task force investigating online child exploitation and human trafficking in Cebu was looking into the matter.
The FBI also acknowledged awareness of the allegations and said it would assist Philippine authorities where appropriate.
It added that any related allegations involving possible violations of US federal law would be examined.
Thomas Markle Denies His Son’s Claims

Thomas Sr. has responded forcefully to the accusations.
Speaking to the Daily Mail from a rehabilitation facility in Florida, he said he was deeply upset by his son’s allegations and insisted they were false.
He denied involvement in the alleged conduct and questioned Thomas Jr.’s motives.
The Metropolitan Police, meanwhile, confirmed that it was conducting internal inquiries to determine whether officers had handled the letter Meghan described from 2018.
However, the force clarified that it was not investigating Thomas Sr. and had not previously investigated a man in his 80s living outside the United Kingdom.
Buckingham Palace declined to comment when asked whether King Charles had been aware of the correspondence, describing the matter as one for Harry and Meghan.
Meghan and Thomas Markle’s Relationship Has Been Fractured for Years

The relationship between Meghan and her father deteriorated publicly before her royal wedding.
Thomas Sr. had initially been expected to walk his daughter down the aisle, but he ultimately missed the ceremony amid controversy surrounding staged paparazzi photographs and reports of health difficulties.
King Charles, then the Prince of Wales, accompanied Meghan for part of the ceremony instead.
In the years that followed, Meghan spoke about the emotional impact of losing her relationship with her father, including during her 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey.
Despite their continued estrangement, she attempted to contact Thomas Sr. in December 2025 after learning that he had undergone a leg amputation.
Her representative later confirmed that a letter she had written had reached him, although the contents were not made public.
Duchess of Sussex Expresses Concern for Children’s Safety

In her latest statement, Meghan said she was deeply distressed by the reports that had emerged.
She expressed sympathy for any children who may have experienced harm and emphasized the importance of ensuring that their safety remains the priority.
The Duchess also voiced hope that the authorities would fully establish the facts and that justice would be served wherever wrongdoing was proven.
Her comments have brought a new dimension to a family dispute that has often been discussed in connection with royal tensions and media controversies.
While the allegations involving Thomas Markle Sr. remain disputed, Meghan has now publicly linked her decision to prevent contact between him and her children to concerns she says date back to 2018.
The investigation-related developments remain ongoing, and no conclusion about Thomas Sr.’s responsibility can be drawn from the reported allegations alone.
