‘Jeopardy!’ Champion Anthony Cantor Reveals the Unexpected Love Story Behind His Marriage
Anthony Cantor has been turning heads on Jeopardy! with his impressive trivia knowledge and growing winning streak. But beyond his success on the quiz show, the Toronto-based television and podcast producer has a personal story that proved just as memorable — including an unusual first encounter with the woman who would become his wife.
During his third appearance, Cantor opened up to host Ken Jennings about meeting his future spouse on a Vancouver bus nearly 23 years ago. The story began with a German-language fantasy novel and an awkward attempt to strike up a conversation, prompting an amused reaction from Jennings.
By the time Cantor returned for the October 22 episode, he had secured three consecutive victories and accumulated $58,800 in winnings. His achievements on the show have drawn attention to a career that spans television production, podcasting and academic research.

What Does Anthony Cantor Do for a Living?
Cantor works as a television and podcast producer, a career he described as his dream job during his Jeopardy! debut.
According to his LinkedIn profile, he joined Bright North Studios, formerly known as Efran Films Canada, in Toronto as a writer and producer in July 2025. He previously worked as an associate producer and director at Efran Films Canada from November 2021 to June 2023.
His professional background also includes roles with Texas Crew Productions, The Walrus and Melbar Entertainment Group. Among the television projects he has contributed to are Never Seen Again and The Gilgo Beach Killer: The House of Secrets.
However, Cantor’s path into the entertainment industry was not a conventional one. Before pursuing production, he worked in academia, teaching history at universities in Canada and the United States.
During his first appearance on Jeopardy!, he explained that his transition into media began when he was hired as a consultant for a documentary about German history, his area of expertise. That opportunity opened the door to television production, where he has now spent approximately eight years.
The Academic Background Behind His Impressive Knowledge
Cantor’s extensive education in history helps explain the breadth of knowledge he brings to the Jeopardy! stage.
He earned a bachelor’s degree in history from Boston University, where he also minored in African Studies. He later continued his studies at the University of British Columbia, earning a master’s degree in history.
After taking a break from his academic pursuits, Cantor returned to university to pursue a doctorate in history at the University of Toronto.
His years of research and teaching eventually became valuable assets in his work on historical documentaries, allowing him to combine academic expertise with a career in storytelling.
The Podcast Exploring a Family’s Hidden History
Alongside his television projects, Cantor has also worked in podcast production through The Walrus Lab.
One of his projects is The Hidden Holocaust Papers: Survival. Exile. Return., a six-part series that premiered in January 2025.
The podcast follows Canadian author Timothy Taylor as he travels to Germany to investigate previously hidden aspects of his family’s history. The series brings together historical research and personal discovery, reflecting Cantor’s longstanding interest in exploring the past through compelling stories.
How a German Copy of ‘The Lord of the Rings’ Changed His Life

While Cantor’s professional achievements have helped establish his reputation, his story about meeting his wife may be one of his most memorable moments on Jeopardy!.
During his third appearance, Jennings brought up Cantor’s habit of striking up conversations with strangers on public transportation. That prompted the contestant to recall an encounter on Vancouver’s number 41 bus nearly 23 years ago.
A woman boarded the bus and sat nearby, catching Cantor’s attention because she was reading the third volume of The Lord of the Rings in German.
The book immediately gave him a reason to approach her. He realized she could speak German, and her reading choice suggested they might share an interest in subjects familiar to dedicated fantasy fans.
Hoping to make a good impression, Cantor decided to use his German-language skills to start a conversation. Unfortunately, the opening line he came up with was far from a smooth introduction: he simply asked whether she had bought the book locally.
It may not have been the most dazzling conversation starter, but it was enough to begin a relationship that would last.
Nearly 23 years later, the pair are married and have three children. Cantor jokingly acknowledged that his wife had been willing to overlook his awkward attempt to introduce himself.
Jennings responded warmly to the story, congratulating the champion on the memorable circumstances that brought him together with his future wife.

Cantor Keeps Building His ‘Jeopardy!’ Winning Streak
Cantor’s combination of academic expertise, production experience and engaging personality has made him a contestant to watch during the current Jeopardy! season.
Heading into his fourth appearance, he had already won three games and collected $58,800. His early success also put him within reach of the five-win milestone associated with qualification for the Tournament of Champions.
Whether demonstrating his knowledge on the game board or sharing the story of a chance encounter that changed his life, Cantor has given viewers plenty of reasons to take an interest in him beyond his answers.
Jeopardy! airs on weekdays in syndication, with episodes available the following day on Hulu and Peacock.
