Sir Tom Jones moved viewers and fellow coaches on The Voice UK with a deeply personal performance dedicated to his late wife, Linda, whose death from lung cancer in 2016 brought an end to their nearly six-decade marriage.
The 82-year-old singer took to the stage during the Saturday, September 3, 2022, episode, performing “I Won’t Crumble With You If You Fall” while seated in his familiar red coaching chair. The moving rendition stood out in an episode usually focused on aspiring singers competing to impress the coaches.

The Personal Story Behind the Song
Before performing, Jones explained why the song held such significance for him. He said he deliberately chooses music that carries personal meaning, particularly songs that remind people of the importance of supporting loved ones through difficult times.
“I try to pick songs that mean a lot to me,” he explained. “And this song is trying to tell you that people that you love, sometimes they need to be backed up. You need to give them strength and encouragement.”
Jones then opened up about Linda, whose real name was Melinda Trenchard, and the final chapter of her life. During her battle with lung cancer, he had wanted to do everything possible to help her, just as he had throughout their life together.
He recalled how Linda encouraged him to remain strong, even as she was dying.
“She said, ‘Don’t crumble with me, don’t fall now, you’ve done everything you can, you must carry on and do what you do’,” he remembered.
Those words gave the song an even deeper meaning. When Jones first heard it, he felt its message reflected precisely what he and Linda had experienced.
“So I put the song, when I heard it, it was like it was written for this situation. It’s a lovely song,” he said.
Fellow Coaches Moved by the Performance

The emotional weight of Jones’s rendition was evident throughout the performance. His fellow coaches appeared deeply affected, with Anne-Marie looking particularly close to tears as he sang.
Rather than delivering a conventional showcase of vocal power, Jones brought the song’s message to the forefront, drawing on his own experience of love, loss and the need to keep moving forward after losing someone close.
His explanation afterward offered viewers a glimpse into the personal memories behind the performance, making the song more than simply another musical moment on the show.
The Song’s History and Its Place in Tom Jones’s Career

“I Won’t Crumble With You If You Fall” was written by Bernice Johnson Reagon and originally featured on her 1975 album, Give Your Hands To Struggle: The Evolution Of A Freedom Fighter.
Jones later recorded his own version as the opening track on Surrounded by Time, his 2021 covers album produced by Ethan Johns. The record marked another chapter in the veteran singer’s remarkable musical comeback.
For Jones, however, the song’s significance went far beyond its place on an album. Its message had become inseparable from his memories of Linda and the strength she urged him to find after her death in 2016.
His performance on The Voice UK offered a poignant reminder of that bond, showing how music can give deeply personal experiences a voice long after a loved one is gone.
