Fans have been deep diving into Easter Eggs, codes, and signs signaling that the final episode, which aired on December 31, is fake.

Some clues fans have identified that could signal a “fake” finale include the crowd’s folded hands during graduation, similar to Henry Creel’s, and the Dungeons & Dragons books during the epilogue, which spelled out “X A Lie,” referring to Dimension X or The Abyss. January 7 is a significant date, as numerology throughout Season 5 has been heavily influenced by the number 7.

Season 5 included eight episodes, with the last being just over two hours. The final episode showed Hawkins’ heroes defeat the Mind Flayer and Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower), but ended in tragedy as Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) sacrificed herself to ensure the safety of her loved ones and the world.

However, during the epilogue, Eleven’s love interest Mike Wheeler (Finn Wolfhard) shares a theory that Eleven actually escaped and isn’t dead after all. The Duffer Brothers shared in an interview with Happy Sad Podcast that only they and Brown know Eleven’s true ending.
