Stranger Things Did Us Dirty With Steve, But His Finale Fate Couldn’t Be More Perfect

If there was one character the vast majority of Stranger Things fans didn’t want to see die, it was Steve “The Hair’ Harrington (Joe Keery). While there was certainly an intense moment of fear, Steve’s final fate at the end of Stranger Things 5 was absolutely perfect.

After five seasons, it’s clear that The Duffer Brothers have a deep understanding of how much the fandom loves the former king of Hawkins High. As a result, they absolutely weaponized this deep love for Steve Harrington (while ultimately giving us some pretty solid payoff by the end of Stranger Things’ series finale).

The entire radio tower sequence at the beginning of Stranger Things’ series finale was staged to convince viewers that Steve’s luck had finally run out.

After all, Steve being knocked back and losing his grip on the platform was immediately followed by a cut to black as he started to fall, no doubt generating a simultaneous moment of shock and distress from every viewer who cared even a little about Harrington.

However, we then see Jonathan Byers grabbing Steve’s arm just in time to pull him back up, the entire scene essentially being The Duffers deliberately playing with fans’ emotions (with great success).

Stranger Things Found A Fitting Fate For Steve Harrington

Although the Duffers did us dirty by making us think we’d lost Steve, they do make up for it by giving Harrington one of the best fates out of the entire cast of characters by the end of Stranger Things’ series finale.

As seen in the final epilogue scenes taking place 18 months after the Vecna, The Mind Flayer, and the Upside Down were all destroyed, we learn that Steve has become a little league coach (and Derek Turnbow is on the team!). Likewise, Steve is also hilariously revealed to be the school’s new sex-ed teacher.

Not only do we see that Steve’s still connected to Dustin with the duo going on a road trip, but he also makes plans to stay in touch with Nancy, Jonathan, and Robin while choosing to settle down in Hawkins.

There’s also a tease that he’s found “the one” with a girl named Kristen, suggesting that kids may indeed be in his future, a nod to his hopes to one day have “six little nuggets.”

Overall, it’s incredibly satisfying to see Steve not only survive to the end of Stranger Things, but also have a hopeful future that’s absolutely perfect following his impressive growth and evolution since the show’s first season (which does make it easier to forgive The Duffers for that brutal fakeout).
